From 中期英語 conseillour, counseiler, from Anglo-Norman cunseiler, cunseiliour, from Old French conseillier, from Latin consiliator, agent noun from cōnsilior (“to take counsel”), from cōnsilium (“plan, council, wisdom, advice”). Compare councilor. Displaced native 中期英語 redere, 中期英語 redesman, and 中期英語 redyeve, from 古期英語 rǣdġiefa (literally “advice giver”).
