From Proto-Italic *(s)merdā, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)merd-h₂- (“stench”), a collective formation from *(s)merd- (“to bite, sting”). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *smordъ (“stink, odor”) and its descendants, Latvian smards (“odor”), Proto-Balto-Slavic *smirˀdḗˀtei (“to stink”).
