ġe- +‎ -sīene. Second element from earlier *-sēanī or *-seahnī. Further etymology uncertain. Some seemingly derived forms may instead reflect Proto-West Germanic *-siunī or Proto-West Germanic *-sānī; cf. Old High German ougsiuni (“visible to the eye”), but also Old High German seltsāni (“rarely seen, strange”).
