Uncertain; perhaps inspired by floppa (“a caracal: a type of cat native to Southern Africa, West Asia, and parts of Central and South Asia”), and associated with DoggoLingo.

The name was popularised by, and perhaps originated in, a meme video posted around February 2021 consisting of four panels, one of which shows a person holding and rotating a bat-eared fox beside a static image of American actor and wrestler John Cena with a speech bubble from him stating: "Rotate the plompy".
