From Middle English gud mornynge (also as goode morne, gode morne), from 古期英語 *gōdne morgen (“good morning”), an ellipsis for an expression such as "I wish you a good morning", equivalent to good +‎ morning. 1. Used as a greeting when meeting someone for the first time in the morning.

   "Good morning, Joan," said Judy at 9:00 AM.

   The host began with "Good morning, your majesties, presidents, prime ministers and other dear guests."

4. (by extension, informal) Said to someone who has come to a belated realization.
