「言葉巧みに誘惑する者」の意。「The Pied Piper of Hamelin（ハーメルンの笛吹き男）」の伝説に由来する語。pied は「まだら色の」という意味の語であり、ハーメルンの笛吹き男が奇妙なまだら色の服を着ていたことに由来する。piper は「笛吹き」「パイプを吹く人」の意。「ハーメルンの笛吹き男」の伝説は、笛の音でねずみを誘い出して駆除し、ねずみの害に困窮していたハーメルンの街の人々を喜ばせたが、街の人々が当初約束していた報酬を出し渋ったことに怒り、笛の音で街の子どもたちを誘い出し、誘拐してしまった、という話である。13世紀の実際に同様の出来事があったとされているが、子どもが街から出ていった具体的な理由や背景は未詳。少年十字軍と関連付ける等さまざまな考察がなされている。Wiktionary英語版
