The relation with Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (“wide and flat”) offered by Pokorny is rejected by De Vaan, who suggests Proto-Indo-European *pleHk- (“pleasingness or permission”), with only Tocharian relatives (such as Tocharian B plāk- (“to please”)). If the laryngeal is h₂, a semantically difficult relationship could be drawn to Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂k- (“to hit”), whence Ancient Greek πλήσσω (plḗssō, “I strike”). Related to placeō.
