From 中期英語 ȝelu-red, ȝolowhered, from 古期英語 ġeolurēad (“reddish yellow, orange”), from Proto-West Germanic *gelwaraud (“orange”), equivalent to yellow +‎ red. Cognate with Saterland Frisian jeelrood (“orange”), Dutch geelrood (“orange”), German Low German geelroot (“orange”), German gelbrot (“yellow-red, orange”).
