Deinanthe is a genus consisting of a few species of rare, small, herbaceous-habit plants with rhizomes found in the mountain woodlands of East Asia ranging from China to Japan. They are handsome clump-forming perennials good for shade, woodland and rock gardens. These beautiful deciduous foliage plants with large leaves divided in two at its apex will grow at slow rate to be bushy and shrub-like, 2ft tall and wide. 3-4 leaves, which are deep green, roughly textured, deep veined, cordate and serrated, are borne on the 15cm long slender shoots, emerging from stout knobby rhizoms. Leaves are easily scroched and checked from direct sun. In late summer to early fall, the delicate waxy double-round cup-shaped flowers in rich to pale purple-blue, rose or white to near white, resembling miniature hydrangea florets, are borne terminally in loose clusters of showy nodding dense umbels with numerous yellowish to pale blue anthers, which may occasionally have the sterile floret. Roots and leaves are edible.
