     After interviewing older people and gathering information from many available sources, the scientists presented a preliminary report identifying 58 kinds of domestic and wild animals that had shown unusual activities before those earthquakes. As an example, one chapter of the report describes that before the magnitude 8.5 earthquake, China’s largest, struck in Haiyuan County, Ninghsia Province, northwestern China, in 1920, wolves ran about in packs, sparrows flew around wildly, and dogs barked in a most unusual way.
