From 中期英語 hoppere, alteration of *hoppe (found in grashoppe (“grasshopper”)), from 古期英語 *hoppa (“one who hops, hopper”), equivalent to hop +‎ -er. Cognate with Dutch hopper (“hopper”), Swedish hoppare (“hopper, jumper”), Icelandic hoppari (“hopper”).
