From Proto-West Germanic *skulan, from Proto-Germanic *skulaną (“to owe”). Compare this sense of Swedish skola for sense 4.
Cognate with Old Frisian skela, Old Saxon skulan, Old High German sculan, Old Norse skulu, Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌿𐌻𐌰𐌽 (skulan).
sċulan
In senses 1 and 2, the infinitive (indicating the thing that should or must be done) is sometimes omitted (compare this sense of Swedish skola), and must be inferred from context. For example, Ðēos bōc sċeal tō Wigoraċeastre implies an infinitive with the meaning of "go" (such as gān), and therefore means "This book should/must go to Worcester".
