From 中期英語 *smorchen ("to spatter, soil"; attested in besmorchid (“bespattered, soiled all over”)), of uncertain origin. Perhaps a derivative of 中期英語 smeoren, smuren, smeren (“to smear”) or related to 中期英語 smotry (“sooty, grimy”). Compare also 中期英語 bismotered (“bespattered, soiled”), Old French esmorcher (“to torture”), 中期英語 smoterly, smoterlich (“besmirched”), modern English smut.
