Kuravar, the Tamil word comes from kundru+avan ie. hill man. Kuravar are one of the native Tamil people and they are the people who belongs to kurinji land of Grand Old Tamil country ie. the land divided on the geographical nature and definitely not on the caste base.Kurava tribal group Which has its own divisions among their fellow people same on the geographical nature by attaching name of their place where they live, for example those who live in Attur of salem district will be called by salem melnad kuravar,those who live in Gandarvakottai call themselves as Gandarvakottai Kuravars.The kula theivam (ie.God of their clan) of the people of Kurava tribe is Lord Murugan Assumed to be One of The god of Ancient Tamil country.As they are the inhabitants of mountainous regions of Tamilnadu the use of Bamboo trees is vast among this group.During the Hunting and gathering stage of this people they use bamboos as against animals and in later settlement stage of humans they used bamboos as self defence weapon which later get transformed to silambattam of Tamil country.This form of self defence art is still considered to be great fighting art of Maravars,Kallars who are the other native people of Tamil country. Hence this group of people are grouped under former criminal tribal groups which was created by the British people for "their Colonial Ambitions", which is one of the colonial hangovers in India,these kuravar Group of people still goes under discriminatory verbal abuses from their own people of Tamil country.Empowering this ethnic group of people is very poor since Independence era.Government of India is in fast reformatory mood to rehabilitate this category of people who are now known as denotified communities.There are literary evidences that Kingdom of NanjilNadu ( modern day Nagerkoil Region) was Ruled by a Kurava king and other literary evidence is kutrala kuravanji wrote by Thirikuda Rasappa Kavirayar,shows love and devotion of Ancient Tamil People to Lord KutralaNathar.Historical evidences can be traced from the places like Idukki District of Kerala.Places like Ramakkalmedu,kuravanmala,Idukki archdam(it is the largest arch dam in Asia) are the places showing the early age Kuravas of South India.Among these group of people,the most disadvantaged section is Narikuravar who still live as gypsies.They were once travellers on the high roads of freedom, crafting their own destinies as hunters, gatherers, traders, transporters and craftsmen, but exist today in the no-mans-land of the settled world. Nevertheless they persist.The Narikurava or Narikorava (Tamil: நரிக்குறவர்) are a community of Domba ("Indian gypsies") who reside in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
