Inherited from 古期英語 anġel, either a modification of enġel after its etymon Latin angelus (through the intermediate of Proto-West Germanic *angil) or a reborrowing from the Latin, which is in turn from Ancient Greek ἄγγελος (ángelos); forms with /au̯/ are in turn remodelled upon or reborrowed from Anglo-Norman angel, angle.

Supplanted engel after the Early 中期英語 period.
