プログラミング言語関連では,FORTRAN用語で「類」といい,プログラム単位中に現われる英字名が表わす文法上の対象を,その現われ方によって8種類に分類したもの.たとえば,配列,変数など.COBOL用語では「字類」といい,基本項目にはいるデータの文字の種類(数字,英字,英数字)を指す.
オブジェクトに関するひな(雛)形であって,そのようなオブジェクトの専用体用の内部構造と操作の集合とを定義するもの.
<備考>オブジェクト指向プログラミングでは,クラスは,C,PASCALのような,ある種のプログラム言語におけるデータ型に相当する
少なくとも一つの特性を共通してもっているような要素の集合.
一組の集合の要素を定義する属性の集合.

From Middle French classe, from Latin classis (“a class または division of the people, assembly of people, the whole body of citizens called to arms, the army, the fleet, later a class または division in general”), from Proto-Indo-European *kelh₁- (“to call, shout”). Doublet of clas and classis.

- (sociology, countable) A social grouping, based on job, wealth, etc. In Britain, society is commonly split into three main classes: upper class, middle class and working class.

- (military) A group of people subject to be conscripted in the same military draft, or more narrowly those persons actually conscripted in a particular draft.
- (object-oriented programming, countable) A set of objects having the same behavior (but typically differing in state), or a template defining such a set in terms of its common properties, functions, etc.
- One of the sections into which a Methodist church or congregation is divided, supervised by a class leader.
