     The alert technically ended late last night when Chinese officials announced that “no strong earthquake will occur in the near future” in the Peking area.      “According to the report from the state's seismological bureau,” the statement said, “after the earthquake in the Tangshan‐Fengnan area, the general tendency is that aftershock activities are diminishing, but there will be ups and down in the process and there may be fairly strong aftershocks.”
