語源
Inherited from Proto-Italic *teksō, ultimately from either *tek- or *teḱ-. There are multiple separate possible explanations for the exact development of the word:
- Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *tḗtḱ-ti. The outcome of word-internal *-tḱ- in Latin is unclear, but a development to -s- is also seen in ursus.
- Perhaps from *téḱ-s-ti or *ték-s-ti, an s-present from *tek- (“to weave”). There are other s-presents throughout the Indo-European family, such as Hittite 𒁖𒆠𒅖𒍣 (ták-ki-iš-zi /tákkišzi/, “to arrange, prepare”) and Middle High German dehsen (“to break flax”). The reconstruction of *ték- with a plain velar is somewhat tentative; the only conclusive evidence pointing to it is Old Armenian թեքեմ (tʻekʻem, “to bend; to fashion, forge”), whereas other data is consistent with *teḱ-.
Compare Ancient Greek τίκτω (tíktō), Sanskrit ताष्टि (tā́ṣṭi), and Old High German tāht (“wick”).
