【補説】
24 の GPS 衛星 (高度 2 万 km; 半日で地球を一周し, スピードは秒速 3.8 km) が地球を取り巻いており, 衛星の位置と原子時計による正確な時刻情報を含んだ信号を発している. それを受信した GPS 端末は, 異なる衛星から到着した信号の時間差から衛星までの距離を計算できる. 幾何学的には 3 点からの距離が与えられれば 3 次元的な位置を計算できるが, 端末の時計は原子時計ほどの精度はないため, 時間の補正のために 4 つの衛星からの信号を受信して利用する.
光速(電波の速度)は秒速 30 万キロなので, 原子時計が 1 億分の 1 秒の誤差であれば 3 m の範囲で位置を特定できる. このくらいの精度を考えるには相対性理論の効果も取り入れる必要がある. すなわち, 特殊相対性理論によると地上から見て高速で運動している衛星の時間は 1/√(1−(v/c)２) 倍 (v, c は衛星の速度と光速度) となり, 1 兆分の 80 程度時計の進み方が遅くなる. 一方, 一般相対性理論の示す重力による時計の遅れ GM/Rc２ (G, M, R は万有引力定数, 地球質量, 地球中心からの距離) は衛星よりも地上のほうが大きく, 衛星の時計は差し引き 1 兆分の 500 程度進んで見えることになる. こうした補正も GPS システムには取り入れられている.
