Unknown; perhaps borrowed from a Nilo-Saharan or Afroasiatic language, compare Nubian kadī (“cat”), Arabic قِطّ (qiṭṭ, “cat, tomcat”), Classical Syriac ܩܛܘ (qaṭṭu, “cat”), or possibly a Wanderwort, compare Proto-Uralic *käďwä (“female (of a fur animal)”). and Proto-Germanic *kattuz.
