loomery (plural loomeries)

1. A breeding colony of guillemots (seabirds of the genus Uria) or other auks, typically densely packed on a sea cliff; the cliff or ledges on which such seabirds breed.

• The word arose among 19th-century Arctic whalers and sealers, who visited such colonies to take eggs and birds for food; it remains in current use among birdwatchers and ornithologists. It is applied chiefly to the common guillemot (Uria aalge), called the common murre in North America.
