「instead」は「その代わりに」という意味で、ある行動や選択肢を取る代わりに別の行動や選択肢を取ることを示す。特定の状況や文脈において、一つの事柄を他の事柄と置き換える際に用いられる。
「go」、「use」、「do」、「try」などの動詞と共に用いられることが多い。例えば、「Go to the park instead.」(公園に行く代わりに)、「Use this one instead.」(これを使う代わりに)など。
"I decided to walk instead of taking a taxi."(タクシーを使う代わりに歩くことにした)
"He didn't come, so I went instead."(彼が来なかったので、私が代わりに行った)
"Instead of complaining, why not try to fix the problem?"(文句を言う代わりに、問題を解決しようと試みてはどうだろうか)
「in return」は「その代わりに」という意味で、特に何かを与えたり、行ったりした後に、それに対する報酬や返礼として何かを受け取る状況を表す。相互の行為や交換を強調する。
「give」、「offer」、「provide」などの動詞と共に用いられることが多い。例えば、「Give me a favor in return.」(その代わりに私に恩を返して)、「Offer help in return.」(その代わりに助けを提供して)など。
"I helped him, and he helped me in return."(私は彼を助け、その代わりに彼は私を助けた)
"She gave me a gift, and I thanked her in return."(彼女は私にプレゼントをくれたので、その代わりに私は彼女に感謝した)
"He provided me with information, and I paid him in return."(彼は私に情報を提供し、その代わりに私は彼に支払った)
「on the other hand」は「その代わりに」という意味で、特に二つの事柄を比較する際に、一方の事柄に対する別の観点や選択肢を提示するときに用いられる。対比や対照を強調する。
「But」、「However」、「Yet」などの接続詞と共に用いられることが多い。例えば、「But on the other hand, it's expensive.」(しかし、その一方で、それは高価だ)、「However, on the other hand, there are some risks.」(しかしながら、その一方で、リスクもある)など。
"The job is well-paid. On the other hand, it is very demanding."(その仕事は給料が良い。しかし、その一方で、とても要求が厳しい)
"He is very intelligent. On the other hand, he is not very social."(彼はとても賢い。しかし、その一方で、あまり社交的ではない)
"The plan is promising. On the other hand, it requires a lot of resources."(その計画は有望だ。しかし、その一方で、多くのリソースが必要だ)
