"remain"は「残る」「残存する」の意味を持つ。物質や抽象的な概念が何らかの状況や状態において、そのまま続いていることを表す。特に、何かが終わった後にまだ存在していることを強調する際に用いられる。
remain silent(沈黙を保つ)、remain unchanged(変わらない)、remain unknown(未知のままである)など。
1. Only a few days remain until the deadline.(締め切りまであと数日しか残っていない)
2. Some questions remain unanswered.(いくつかの質問が未解決のままである)
3. The building remains intact despite the earthquake.(地震にもかかわらず、その建物は無傷のままである)
"be left over"は「余る」「残る」の意味を持つ。特に、食事やイベントなどが終わった後に残った物を指す際に用いられる。また、予定や計画が完了した後に未使用のまま残ったリソースや時間を指すこともある。
leftover food(残り物の食べ物)、leftover materials(余った材料)、leftover time(余った時間)など。
1. There is some food left over from the party.(パーティーから食べ物が少し余っている)
2. We have some leftover materials from the previous project.(前のプロジェクトから材料が少し余っている)
3. What should we do with the leftover time?(余った時間をどう使うべきか)
"be left"は「残る」「余る」の意味を持つ。特に、何かが取り除かれた後に残ったもの、または何かが終わった後にまだ存在しているものを指す際に用いられる。
be left alone(一人残される)、be left behind(置き去りにされる)、be left in the dark(知らされないでいる)など。
1. There is only one slice of cake left.(ケーキが一切れだけ残っている)
2. I was left alone in the room.(私は部屋に一人残された)
3. He was left in the dark about the plan.(彼は計画について知らされないでいた)
