From 中期英語 tike, tyke, from Old Norse tík (“female dog”), from Proto-Germanic *tīkō. Compare Icelandic tík, Faroese tík, and Swedish tik, all meaning “bitch, female dog”.
Sense 5 (“Roman Catholic”) is an alteration of taig, and was first used in writing in the early 20 century.
