語源
From Latin dōlium.
名詞
dolium (plural dolia)
- (historical, archaeology) A large earthenware vessel used for the storage and transportation of goods (especially wine an olive oil) in the ancient Western Mediterranean.
-
1908, P. H. Ditchfield, editor, Memorials of Old London, volume 1:
-
From the time of John, the Tower seems to have been used as an arsenal, suits of armour, siege engines, and iron fetters being kept there; and in 1213 we find John drawing from the stores in the fortress thirty "dolia" or casks of wine, and also giving orders that "bacones nostros qui sunt apud turrim" should be killed and salted, so that pig-styes and wine cellars then formed part of its domestic buildings.

語源
Disputed.
- According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *delh₁- (“to cut”); the same root as dolō (“to hew, cut”) and doleō (“to suffer”). However, the root of dolō is usually associated with woodwork, not earthernware. De Vaan further suggests that this theory is unable to regularly explain the long ō-vowel.
- According to John Pairman Brown, a Punic commercial loanword, comparing Hebrew דֳּלִי (dŏlī) which already appears in Isaiah 40:15 and is from Proto-Semitic, also Arabic دَلْو (dalw, “bucket”) etc.
- De Vaan likewise suggests that the term may be a loanword since it refers to pottery. However, he does not provide a specific source for the borrowing.
