「symbol」は、具体的な物体や形状が、抽象的な概念やアイデアを表現する際に用いられる。例えば、平和を象徴する鳩や、愛を象徴するハートなどがこれに該当する。
represent, stand for, signify。これらはすべて「表す、象徴する」を意味する。
1. The dove is a symbol of peace. (鳩は平和の象徴である。)
2. The heart is often used as a symbol of love. (ハートはよく愛の象徴として使われる。)
3. The Olympic rings are a symbol of unity among nations. (オリンピックの五輪は国々の結束の象徴である。)
「sign」は、情報を伝えるための視覚的な表示を指す。道路標識や店舗の看板、手話などがこれに該当する。また、何かが起こりそうな兆候や、何かを示す証拠という意味でも使われる。
show, indicate, suggest。これらはすべて「示す、指し示す」を意味する。
1. The sign on the door says "Push". (ドアの看板には「押す」と書かれている。)
2. He gave me a sign to start. (彼は私に始める合図をした。)
3. The dark clouds are a sign of rain. (暗い雲は雨の兆しである。)
