a measure of the amount of minerals (mostly calcium and phosphorous) contained in a certain volume of bone. bmd measurements are used to diagnose osteoporosis (a condition marked by decreased bone mass), to see how well osteoporosis treatments are working, and to predict how likely the bones are to break. low bmd can occur in patients treated for cancer. also called bone mineral density, bone density, and bone mass.

一定量の骨の中に含まれるミネラル分（大部分はカルシウムとリンである）の量を示す指標。骨粗鬆症（骨量の減少を特徴とする病態）の診断や、骨粗鬆症に対する治療の奏功の程度の確認、骨の折れやすさの予測などにbmdの測定値が用いられる。がんに対する治療を受けている患者では、bmdの低下がみられることがある。「bone density（骨密度）」、「bone mineral density（骨塩量）」、「bone mass（骨量）」とも呼ばれる。
