Borrowed from Latin geminī, plural of geminus (“twin”), calque of Ancient Greek Δίδυμοι (Dídumoi), calque of Akkadian 𒀯𒈠𒀸 (māšu), calque of Sumerian 𒀯𒈦𒋰𒁀 (MAŠ.TAB.BA, “the Divine Twins, in Mesopotamia identified as Lugal-irra and Meslamta-ea; name of constellation”). See Lugal-irra and Meslamta-ea.
Gemini (symbol ♊︎)
Perhaps identical with the above (compare Latin ēdepol (“by Pollux”), ēcastor (“by Castor”)), but perhaps more likely distinct in origin: compare Dutch jemenie, jemie, German gemine, jemine, Czech jémine, all ultimately shortened from Latin Iēsū domine (“O Lord Jesus”).
Phono-semantic matching of Hindi जमना (jamnā), alternative form of यमुना (yamunā).
From geminī (“twins”).
Second-declension noun, plural only.
