From Proto-Italic *flagmā, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰl̥-g-mh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰl̥g- (“to shimmer, gleam, shine”). Compare flagrō (“to blaze”) and fulgō (“to flash, shine”) from the same root, as well as Ancient Greek φλογμός (phlogmós, “flame”).
