1 驚いた，びっくりした (cf. surprise 他動詞 1a).

用例

a surprised look びっくりした顔つき.

She looked a little surprised. 彼女は少々驚いた様子だった.
“His wife walked out on him."—“I'm not surprised." 「彼の奥さんは彼を捨てて出ていってしまったよ」「やっぱりね」.
I should not be surprised if it snowed tonight. 今晩はどうやら雪が降りそうだ.

2 叙述的用法の形容詞

a 〔+前置詞+(代)名詞〕〔…に〕驚いて，びっくりして〔at，by〕《★【用法】 by は受身性が強い》.

用例

You will be surprised at [by] his progress. 彼の(予想外の)進歩に驚くだろう.

We were surprised at finding the house empty. その家が空き家になっているのを見て驚いてしまった (cf. surprised 2b).

b 〔+to do〕〈…して〉驚いて，びっくりして.

用例

I'm very [much] surprised to hear of his failure. 彼が失敗したということを聞いて驚いている《★【用法】 much は《文語》》.

We were surprised to find the house empty. その家が空き家になっているのを見て驚いてしまった (cf. surprised 2a).

c 〔+that〕〈…ということに〉驚いて，びっくりして.
