From Proto-Italic *-is, possibly in part from reanalysis of Proto-Indo-European *-ih₂ (originally a suffix used to form feminine nouns). According to Sihler 1995, it is unclear to what extent i-stem adjectives were common in Proto-Indo-European; they are relatively rare in Greek and Indo-Iranian, but may have been lost as a shared innovation of these branches.
