Derived from Latin vice (“in place of”), ablative form of vicis (“alternation, turn”). Compare viscount.
Not to be confused with numerical terms beginning with vice- as a variation of Latin vīgintī (“twenty”). Notice how the ī (and sometimes ē) is long in its derived forms, which does not happen with vĭcĭs, vĭcĕ.
From vice.
