1. (astronomy) A unit of length used to measure extremely large distances, equal to approximately 9.46 trillion kilometres 10 trillion kilometres (10 metres), equivalent to the distance light travels in one Julian year.

使用する際の注意点

• The light year is a unit of length, but because it contains the word year, it is sometimes assumed to be a unit of time.
• Light year and light-year are similarly common overall, lightyear being far less common. The form hyphenated form (light-year) leads in the American corpus while the spaced one (light year) leads in the British corpus. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary and GPO Style Manual favor light-year; the OED has light year.
