Borrowed from Latin Scandināvia, from Proto-Germanic *Skadinawjō (“Scadia island”) (compare 古期英語 Sċedeniġ, Old Norse Skáney > Swedish Skåne (“southern tip of Sweden, Scania”)), with the suffix *awjō (“island”) (compare 古期英語 īġ, īeġ (“island”), whence dialectal modern English ey; Old Norse ey (“island”)). Doublet of Scania.
