From 中期英語 *onhande, onhende, from 古期英語 onhende (“on hand, demanding attention”), from Proto-Germanic *anahandijaz. Equivalent to on- +‎ hand. Cognate with Icelandic áhendur (“within reach”). Compare offhand.
