Julian Dowe (born 9 September 1975) is a retired professional footballer from England. He played as a forward in England, Scotland, Sweden & Latvia. After being hailed as the next big thing as child star his career was blighted by injury from as early as 16. He broke numerous goal scoring records as a teen and was coveted by both Manchester United, Manchester City and Leeds.Training with the 1st teams of Premiership clubs as a 15 year old. He eventually signed as schoolboy for Everton. He went on to make his 1st team debut for Wigan Athletic at the age of sixteen. After delighting and frustrating at Springfield Park over a 2 year period where he top scored in both youth team and reserves he became the youngest British player to sign a professional contract in Spain when he joined Atletico Marbella, along with fellow Englishman Andy Gray who joined from Tottenham Hotspur. During his spell there his first team chances were limited due to the foreigner rule that applied pre Bosman. Dowe then went on to play in the Scottish 1st division for Ayr Utd, becoming a folk hero after scoring a 35 yard volley in the Ayrshire Cup Final in the win over local rivals Kilmarnock as a 19 year old. .Again injuries hampered on field progress. After the season end he went to play in the Swedish league playing for Tidaholm. Returning to England he fell into non-league football playing for Hyde Utd which saw him star in their most successful run in the FA Vase. Injury struck which kept Dowe out of the game for some 2 years. On his return to the game he played in the north west counties with Colne before making a leap back into league football with Rochdale. Injury again restricted progress, however Latics fans were treated to glimpses of the promise and undoubted ability Dowe possessed, especially the rocket of a 30 yard strike in the FA Cup. On leaving Rochdale he joined Morecambe and again a successful cup run ensued this time exiting to Premiership side Ipswich in the 3rd round put paid to his professional career in England. A chance exhibition game in Indonesia got Dowe a move to the Latvian Premiership with Ventspils which accumulated with retirement from professional football altogether. A downwards spiral into non-league football around his native Greater Manchester extinguished the once bright career of the player.
