The Italian character of the city of Trieste is unquestionable. Even Marshal Tito has been willing to acquiesce in giving the port to Italy if the rest of the Zone were left to Yugoslavia. But such a proposition evokes nothing but scorn from Rome, for in Zone A as a whole the Italians outnumber the Slavs four to one. The only connection of the city of Trieste with Italy, moreover, is the narrow corridor of Zone A which hugs the Adriatic Sea and carries the main line of the railroad from Venice.

The final settlement gave the hard-bargaining Yugoslavs an additional strip of territory about a mile long an 1,000 yards wide, at the south of Zone A.
Following is a summary of the principal provisions of the agreement:
1. Italy receives almost all of Zone A an 86-square-mile area, with a population of 302,200.
2. Yugoslavia retains Zone B plus the above-mentioned strip detached from Zone A—a total area of 199 square miles, with a population of 73,500.

In spite of construction works being in full swing on the Zone A island, located to the east of the peninsula, Director of the Land and Urban Construction Bureau Lai Weng Leong told media that he had not received any news from the central government regarding a proposed reclamation project designed to narrow the waterway between the two districts.
The project is aimed at paving the way for a complex of community facilities on the Zone A island that is expected to be home to a population of 96,000, as well as an cluster of schools and 28,000 public housing units.
