1. Said of a rider mounted on a horse that is not strong or large enough for the size and weight of the rider.
   • 1797, W. TYNDALE, Α TREATISE ON MILITARY EQUITATION, London, page 30:

     I am therefore led to imagine the reasons they are so under mounted are, first---that unless a Hussar be extremely active and can turn almost as quick as a man on foot, he is useless; therefore agility is required in the animal more than strength; but that is no reason why both agility and strength should not be combined in him if possible.

2. Something that is mounted under something else.
   • 1909 November, The Irrigation Age, volume XXV, number 1, Chicago, page 6:

     The only engine having a design adapted for heavy traction work. The undermounted construction gives it many points of important advantage over the top mounted style as used by all others.

   • 1999, Ask the Family Handy-man, Reader’s Digest, page 221:

     Sinks can also be undermounted — attached to the underside of the counter with clips or adhesive.

   • 2017, Ben Coes, Trap the Devil, New York: St. Martin’s Press, page 432:

     The underside of the fuselage rumbled, as undermounted cannon dropped, targetted, and started firing rounds in a high-pitched rat-a-tat-tat.
