Perhaps a back-formation from dryseling, a dissimilated variant of 中期英語 drysning (“a falling of dew”), from 古期英語 drysnan (“to extinguish”), related to 古期英語 drēosan (“to fall, to decline”), making it cognate to modern English droze and drowse. Compare also dialectal Swedish drösla.
