Disputed. Perhaps for Latin *fignis, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeygʷ- (“to stick, set up”), whence fīgō, or for Latin *fidnis, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyd- (“to split”), whence findō. (Can this etymology be sourced?)
