Learned borrowing from Latin fortuītus (“happening by chance, accidental, random, fortuitous”), from *fortu- (“chance, fortune, luck”) + -ītus (suffix forming adjectives). *Fortu- is thought to be from *fortus, from fors (“chance, luck”) (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰer- (“to bear, carry”)) + -tus (suffix forming action nouns). Doublet of fortuity.
fortuitous (comparative more fortuitous, superlative most fortuitous)
Sense 1.1 (“having good fortune or success”) is now the most common sense. However, some regard it as incorrect, and say that the word should only be used in sense 1 (“happening by chance”), regardless of whether the outcome is favourable or not.
