• Garner's Modern English Usage, while recommending the unaccented form mesalliance of this word, differentiates between it and misalliance. Mesalliance specifically refers to an unsuitable marriage according to socioeconomic mores (e.g. a marriage between a nobleman and a commoner), while misalliance refers to an unsuitable marriage where the personalities/needs/wants/values of the couple are at odds. In Garner's words, "A mesalliance may be a happy marriage, but a misalliance never is."
• For example, the mesalliance between Edward VIII (a royal) and Wallis Simpson (a commoner) was, by all accounts, a happy marriage. In contrast, the non-mesalliance between Charles III (a royal) and Lady Diana Spencer (a noblewoman) was so messy and unhappy that it could be called a misalliance.
