toon (plural toons)
Borrowed from Hindi तून (tūn), from Sanskrit तुणि (tuṇi, “Cedrela toona”).
toon (countable and uncountable, plural toons)
Standard spelling for a dialectal phonological preservation of 中期英語 toun, town, towne (and other forms), which was pronounced the same as this dialectal form, with the now-standard form town having diverged therefrom by action of the Great Vowel Shift. See town for further etymology.
See also me (dialectal form of my), hoose (“house”), thoo (“thou”), and oot (“out”), for similar cases.
