   1. (idiomatic, often) A storebought, mass-produced, inexpensive type of such bread that is very soft and is usually in the Pullman loaf shape.

      There's a pretty big difference between American cheese on white bread and sharp cheddar on French bread.

2. (chiefly US, slang, often derogatory, ethnic slur) A middle-class white person (person of European descent), or a person who 'acts white'.

• The relative sophistication of the process of producing white flour initially created positive associations with progress and wealth; more recently, white bread's longer shelf-life, relative lack of flavor, and associations with harmful bleaching chemicals have created more neutral or even negative associations.
• The ethnic slur is more often encountered as an adjective.
