1. (with dative) to be pleasing or agreeable to; to please, to be nice; to be welcome or acceptable; to satisfy, suit (in a mental rather than a sensual way)

   Synonyms: gaudeō, ovō, exhilarō, grātulor, congrātulor, fruor

   Antonym: displiceō

   sibi placēre ― to be pleased with oneself, to act proud

   placet mihi ― I find this fine/nice

   sī dīs placet ― gods willing (literally, “if it pleases the gods”)

   placēns uxor ― dear wife

   hostia placens Deō ― a sacrifice that pleases God

2. of an accomplishment, e.g. writing, acting, artistry, etc: to please, to win applause, to earn approval or other favorable response
   • 166 BCE, Publius Terentius Afer, Andria 1–3:

     Poēta cum prīmum animum ad scrībendum appulit, / id sibi negōtī crēdidit sōlum darī: / populō ut placērent quās fēcisset fābulās.

     When the poet first applied his mind to writing, he believed that this one task was given to him: that the plays which he had written should be pleasing to the public.

   Synonyms: statuō, cernō, dēcernō, parō, cōnstituō

使用する際の注意点

Designates pleasure in something that one finds agreeable, fitting, while libet refers to a pursuit of something desirable or pleasurable.

Contrasts with dēlectō (“to please the senses, delight, entertain”).
