Bury (countable and uncountable, plural Burys)
出典:『Wiktionary』 (2026/02/14 01:26 UTC 版)
From 古期英語 byriġ, the dative case of burg (“fortified place”) (whence borough); doublet of -borough and -burg.
Due to the collapse of the case system between Old and 中期英語, many placenames retain a fossilized dative form, as places would most commonly have been invoked in the dative (after a preposition in, at, to etc.).
