From Middle English latis, from Middle French lattis (“lathing”), from Old French lattis, from latte (“a lath”), from Frankish *latta (“a lath”), from Proto-Germanic *lattō(n), *laþþō(n), *laþēn (“lath, board”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)lat- (“beam, log”).
