1. (law) An ancestor and all of his or her descendants; all descendants of a person's ancestors of a certain degree.
   • 1898, Sir Frederick Pollock, Frederic William Maitland, The History of English Law‎, 2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, page 296:

     Every person who is in my father’s parentela is nearer to me than any person who can only claim kinship through some ancestor remoter from me than my father.

     The maternal heirs of decedent derive their relationship from decedent's grandparents, and thus fall in the grandparent parentela.

     Most states use a parentelic system, under which the intestate estate passes to grandparents and their descendants, and if none to great-grandparents and their descendants, and if none to great-great-grandparents and their descendants, and so on down each line (parentela) descended from an ancestor until an heir is found.
