Sledge Hammer! is an American satirical police sitcom produced by New World Television that ran for two seasons on ABC from 1986 to 1988. The series was created by Alan Spencer and stars David Rasche as Inspector Sledge Hammer, a preposterous caricature of the standard "cop on the edge" character, whose name is apparently mutuated from Mike Hammer. Indeed, Sledge Hammer is most strongly influenced by Clint Eastwood's Harry Callahan character. Al Jean and Mike Reiss, best known for their work on The Simpsons, wrote for the show and worked as story editors.

A sledgehammer is a tool consisting of a large, flat head attached to a lever (or handle). The head is typically made of metal. The sledgehammer can apply more impulse than other hammers, due to its large size. Along with the mallet, it shares the ability to distribute force over a wide area. This is in contrast to other types of hammer, which concentrate force in a relatively small area.
