From 中期英語 unsemli, probably a partial calque of Old Norse úsǽmiligr (“unseemly”); equivalent to un- +‎ seemly. Cognate with Icelandic ósæmileg (“offensive”), Norwegian usømmelig (“unseemly”), Danish usømmelig (“unseemly”), German unziemlich.
